In this episode of Help Me Teach the Bible, I talk with Mark Futato, professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, where he teaches core classes on both Hebrew and Old Testament.Futato has written a number of books on the Psalms that flow out not only from his study but also his love for and his living with the Psalms. All the psalms are designed to teach us to do one thing -- to worship. In Luke 24:27 we find Christ himself, “beginning with Moses and all the prophets, interpreting to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” This book is also called the Psalter. In other words, each of the psalms represents a bridge or conduit through which the grace of God can be conveyed into our lives. This book, therefore, teaches us how to be honest before God. The string glory of a sunset, the delicacy of a rose, or the life found in a crystal brook leave many in awe of God's power. First, the Psalms instruct us to remember. The voice of the Lord is powerful; The voice of the Lord is full of majesty. Only a few Psalms detail Israel's history, but many were written during crucial events in the life of David and reflect his feelings during those crises. The Psalms reach beyond just the doctrine of Scripture and into the human heart.
