  • It’s futile to spend time building the best ladder if it’s to climb the wrong wall. Similarly, unless you frame the right issue (Choose the Right Wall), your strategy, no matter how awesome, will be a waste of time—and could make the real issue worse.

  • Far too often we come to a problem with a solution already in mind—usually one we’re already comfortable using. But unless you know the terrain you need to cover by mapping the wall to climb (Draw the Right Map), you will build the wrong ladder to climb it.

    Your map needs to know the physics of the issue—what causes it—if you’re going to solve it.

  • Once you’ve mapped the territory you must cover, you can then identify a high leverage strategy for solving the issue (Find the Right Solution).

    Often our solutions come from what we see in front of us. By building an extensive map of the territory, you can find solutions in unexpected places—solutions that really work.

  • Instead of leaping right into implementation, it’s important to understand that any strategy should be a “learn as you go” process—an important leadership capacity is orchestrating learning.

    You can make sure implementation is effective (Take the Right Action) by identifying the leading indicators you know will show if you’re on the right path and how to correct your strategy as you learn more along the way.
